DSC Summer 2014

Hello all!
Dance Study Cycles is off to a great start! Although Neil Flemming will not be joining us this time around, we are so excited to be working closely with Kate Jewett,  dancer and rehearsal director for Shen Wei Dance Arts in New York. We are studying the techniques used by the company helping us to understand the repertory of Shen Wei more intensely. In technique class with Sara Procopio, founding member and dancer for Shen Wei Dance Arts, we are focusing on bouncing, folding, spiraling, using momentum, and more! We can't wait to see how far we go this week because this is a true INTENSIVE with so much information to take in with such little time!

Check out what's been happening!

UArts Dance Study Cycles is an innovative project for professional experience in preparation for careers and advanced study in dance. Dance does not exist in a vacuum. Recognizing the current need for contemporary programs of study with the capacity for young artists to experience national and international exchanges in dance, UArts Dance Study Cycles is designed specifically for advanced undergraduate students or recent graduates seeking to build new networks across geographies. Distinctive for its rigorous training, critical discourse, individual mentorship and engagement with internationally recognized artists, Dance Study Cycles will utilize the University of the Arts as its creative home base.

Aligned with The School of Dance’s commitment to moving students closer to the professional world of dance, UArts Dance Study Cycles Summer 2014 is a 2 1/2 week immersion for young artists seeking to further define and expand the scope of their dancing and dance making.

This uniquely focused 2 1/2-week study cycle for emerging dance professionals to gather with a specialized team of artistic mentors allows time and space to explore, research, inquire and collaborate while creating choreographic work and participating in the work of others. For those who enroll in the France travel cycle, participants will immerse in the life and culture of an international summer festival, all while working together to generate ideas for futures in dance.  Designed to provide individual mentorship alongside rigorous study, the strength of the Dance Study Cycles is in its focused experiential study and capacity to serve artists with a program that truly moves, both in the studio and in the world.

Hey guys! Here's an update on the past week!
Wednesday, January 8 we had a beautiful ballet class led by Anne White! We are really getting our ballerina status on! Later in the day we had a workshop led by Jesse Zaritt. Jesse received his MFA in Dance at Hollins University/The American Dance Festival in 2008. He also teaches modern at University of the Arts.  He is a former member of Shen Wei Arts Dance Company and Inbal Pinto Dance Company. The workshop focused on BMC which is Body-Mind Centering. We did a lot of exercises and improvisation to get in tuned with our senses as well as our inner body such as our veins, arteries, fat, fascia and so much more. We also did some partnering exercises and looked at a few pictures of the human body/skeleton. Everyone looked beautiful in class and through the energy we know a lot of research was being done by the dancers. Jesse was very insightful, inspiring and his charismatic approach to dance was very soothing.  I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did!
"We need to have a certain facility and options... possibilities in our bodies...we are training to be artist not robots!" -Jesse

Here are a few photos from the day! Enjoy!
